NEA-Danbury Members Remind Board That an Investment in Teachers Is an Investment in Danbury’s Children

A sea of #RedforEd greeted Danbury Board of Education members at the Board’s meeting last night where more than 250 Danbury teachers filled the meeting room and spilled into the hallways and outside the building.

Danbury teachers wearing #RedforEd arrived early ahead of last night’s Board of Education meeting.

“We are an investment for this community,” third grade teacher and NEA-Danbury President Erin Daly told Board of Education members. “When you invest in us, you’re investing in our children. When you invest in us, you’re investing in your community. If we as a community refuse to invest in our teachers, we are revealing to our students how little we value them.”

NEA-Danbury is heading into contract mediation and members showed up at the meeting in force to present a united front. Read more

East Haven Teachers: We Deserve a Fair Contract

In a show of solidarity, East Haven teachers wear RedforEd at this year’s convocation.

In the early hours after dawn, members of the East Haven Education Association (EHEA) assembled outside the high school on the morning of their convocation. Greeting them with warm pastries and hot coffee, members of their union’s bargaining team—working hard on their behalf to secure better contracts—also distributed RedforEd shirts and stickers asking for a fair contract.

“We are in a tough negotiations process,” said EHEA President Cynthia Wintjen, who has served in that role for 25 of her 30 years as an East Haven high school science teacher. “The incoming proposal is probably the worst I’ve ever seen in 30 years. Overall, it diminishes the environment for our profession. At the same time the town government has been cutting taxes and lowering the mill rate, it’s giving nothing to our board of education.” Read more

Connecticut Teachers Wear #RedForEd in Solidarity With Arizona

Teachers around Connecticut are wearing Red For Ed today in support of our Arizona colleagues who have requested we observe today as national #RedForEd day.

This day of solidarity is in reaction to the unprecedented decision by the Arizona State Supreme Court to remove the Invest In ED ballot measure from the November ballot. This measure, if enacted, would have raised nearly $700 million for Arizona’s badly underfunded public schools.

Thank you to those of you who have already shared your #RedForEd photos—and if you haven’t yet, there’s still time.
