Free Life Insurance – Name Your Beneficiary

All CEA members are eligible to receive NEA Complimentary Life Insurance at no cost—but many members haven’t named a beneficiary.

Almost half of registered CEA members have not indicated who should receive their benefit if the worst happens. Most members choose their kids. But what if your grandmother is struggling on a fixed income? Or your nephew needs college money? By naming your beneficiaries, you can help whoever needs the support most.

If you’ve chosen beneficiaries before or have experienced a life-changing event, please reconfirm your choice. It only takes a few minutes, so click here and name your beneficiaries now.

Building Rep Reminds Teachers of the Many Benefits of CEA Membership

“A union allows teachers to be stronger,” says Cooperative Education Services Education Association building rep Marilyn Della Rocco. “Together we can accomplish more and have more of a voice.”

Della Rocco, a preschool teacher at Six to Six Interdistrict Magnet School in Bridgeport who also serves as co-vice president of her local association, says it’s very important for teachers to be engaged with their union because there are many groups who seek to erode teachers’ rights.

“The rights to a half-hour lunch, being able to have prep time, having class sizes that are appropriate to the developmental stage of the children—these are all things teachers enjoy today because our union has fought for them over the years,” she says. “Without a union, things would be very different.” Read more

How to Enjoy Great Museums for Free

A great museum can offer insight into life in the past, let you view famous works of art or explain the inner workings of everything from a space shuttle to a dinosaur. Visiting a museum is part of the fun of traveling, whether it is a destination in itself (such as the Smithsonian Institution or the Metropolitan Museum of Art) or a lesser-known find (such as the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, or the Mütter Museum of medical history in Philadelphia).

Some museums, such as The British Museum in London and the 19 that make up the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., are always free, while others have a pay-what-you-wish policy that lets you set your budget.

But many museums charge admission fees. Although the average U.S. museum admission fee is just $7, according to the U.S. Embassy, it’s not unusual for popular museums to charge $15 or $20 for adults. If you want to bring the whole family with you, that can really add up. Read more

6 Steps to Hassle-free Home Improvements

A well-planned, well-executed upgrade can add comfort, convenience, beauty and value to your home. Unfortunately, not all improvement projects turn out well. We’ve all heard horror stories of contractors who damage property, delay completion, add unexpected charges and cause other problems that can leave homeowners loaded with regrets—and big bills.

Take these six simple precautions before and during the project to ensure that everything will go smoothly:

Do your homework

Before you start looking for contractors, research the project you’re considering, suggests home improvement expert Philip Schmidt, author of Don’t Sweat It … Hire It! An A to Z Guide to Finding, Hiring & Managing Home Improvement Pros. You can find information in home-improvement magazines and books and via Internet resources such as YouTube and other layman-friendly sites.

The goal here is not to become an expert, he says. Rather, you need to gather information about best practices, products and materials that are being used for this type of job. Then, you can ask informed questions of your potential contractors and ensure that all necessary details are covered in the contract.
