It’s the most wonderful time of the year—for scam artists and other would-be thieves. Every time you swipe your credit card at the register or enter your personal information on a website, you risk having your sensitive data fall into the wrong hands. And as you count down the remaining shopping days in the season, you may let down your guard in a mad dash to check everything off your list.
“The holiday season is a busy time for consumers, when we do the majority of our shopping for the year, and hackers are priming themselves for the wave of data coming in,” says Yaron Samid, founder of personal finance app BillGuard (which was acquired by lending site Prosper in October 2015). “This is the Super Bowl of scam season.”

As a CEA member, you can save hundreds—even thousands—of dollars a year on everything from groceries, furniture, and home appliances to school supplies, travel, and car purchases and repairs. And now it’s even easier to find out what discounts are available.
CEA has redesigned the member benefits portion of the website to improve navigation. The site features better-than-ever savings in seven categories—including attractions and recreation, sports and entertainment, travel, shopping, and health and medical products.
Every week now through January visit the site for several chances to win great prizes, including free theater tickets, $100 gift cards, hockey four-packs, adventure park climbing passes, and more. There is no limit on the number of times you can enter, and every member who enters is qualified to win a grand prize guided tour vacation package from NEA Member Benefits.
This week’s prize is a $100 Visa gift card.
Bloomfield’s 5th-8th grade softball team received a California Casualty Athletics Grant last year to purchase uniforms and needed equipment. Coach Mary Kay Rendock is at right and assistant coach Lauren Serafino is at left.
Public high schools and middle schools in need of financial help can score up to $3,000 for their sports programs with a California Casualty Thomas R. Brown Athletics Grant. California Casualty, provider of the NEA® Auto & Home Insurance Program, is providing grants to offset budget cuts that have affected middle and high school athletics.
Click here for details and entry forms. Applications must be received by January 15, 2018 for consideration for the 2017-2018 school year.
Thanks to a California Casualty Athletics Grant, last year Mary Kay Rendock, a math instructional coach at Carmen Arace Intermediate School in Bloomfield, was able to purchase uniforms, specialty catcher gloves, and other crucial equipment for the girls middle school softball team she coaches.
