Find Out How You Can Help a Child This Holiday Season

Many families across the state are facing unexpected hardships, but you can make a difference this holiday season by sponsoring a child through the Holiday Bear Project.

Watch the message below to find out why CEA Vice President and CEF President Tom Nicholas urges you to consider sponsoring a child.

Holiday Bear—a project of the Connecticut Education Foundation (CEF), CEA’s charitable arm—helps brighten the holidays for needy children who have been nominated by their teachers.

Gifts and donations must be received by Friday, November 30, at CEA’s offices in Hartford or at CEA UniServ offices for distribution before the holidays.

In an interview with iHeartRadio’s Renee DiNino, Nicholas urged Connecticut residents to sponsor one of 100 public school students across the state, from pre-K through 12th grade, who have been nominated by their teachers to receive holiday gifts (such as books, toys, or gift certificates) and essentials (such as coats and hats). Families of these students are facing financial hardships that will make it difficult to afford holiday gifts this year. Read more

Orange Students Learn About the Importance of Giving Thanks to CEA Holiday Bear Project

Orange teachers Pamela Galatioto, Jo-Anne Escandon, and Janet Greenspan pose with some of the many gifts Orange teachers, students, and families donated this holiday season.

Thanks to the generosity of Orange teachers and students and their families, children who might not have received any gifts this holiday season will now have a brighter holiday.

Members of the student council at Race Brook School recently gathered gifts donated by the entire school community and helped CEA Vice President Jeff Leake load them into a van. Leake also serves at the president of the Connecticut Education Foundation that sponsors the state-wide Holiday Bear project, which links CEA members, students and their families, community members, and businesses with needy public school students.

The annual Holiday Bear project has benefited more than 10,000 Connecticut public school students since it began in 1998.

East Lyme Kindergartners Make the Holidays Brighter for Others

Thanks to the efforts of their teachers and parents, kindergarten students at Flanders Elementary School in East Lyme had the opportunity to find out how good it feels to give this holiday season. Through the Holiday Bear Project kindergarten teachers at Flanders organized their students to purchase gifts for thirteen needy children who attend another Connecticut school.

The Connecticut Education Foundation (CEF), CEA’s charitable arm, runs the Holiday Bear Project every fall to assist families who otherwise wouldn’t be able to provide holiday gifts for their children.

Kindergarten teacher Caryn Novick said her students got a lot out of participating in the Holiday Bear Project.

“As the donations came in, the kids really enjoyed watching the bags get bigger and bigger,” she said. “They were very excited to see all of the toys and clothes.”

CEA Vice President and CEF President Jeff Leake went to East Lyme to collect the wrapped donations.

“The kindergartners were excited to be part of the Holiday Bear Project and excited to be watching their packages leave,” Leake said. “It was really a great morning.”

Thank you to all the teachers and students around Connecticut who participated in the Holiday Bear Project this year and helped make the holidays brighter for over 500 children!
