Thanks to a California Casualty Athletics Grant, last year Crosby High School Head Football Coach David Jurewicz was able to purchase a tackling and blocking sled to increase football team player safety.
Jurewicz, a Waterbury technology teacher, said the grant helped his team out immensely. New regulations designed to keep students safe have reduced the amount of contact time football players are allowed during practice. Without tackling equipment, players don’t have the preparation they need for games.
“Being part of the football team teaches the students a lot,” Jurewicz says. “They learn discipline, accountability, how to be a team player and work with one another, and how to become dedicated workers.”
Awards must be used to help subsidize school sports programs in ways such as purchasing new equipment or paying for competition travel costs. The grant cannot be used for individual student awards.
Applicants must be current members of the National Education Association (NEA) or one of the NEA state affiliates, as well as be an active employee of the public high school or middle school for which funding is sought. All applicants who submit their application by January 15, 2019 will be notified of their status by May 30, 2019. Official rules and applications can be found at www.calcasathleticsgrant.com.
