State Teacher of the Year Says Success Has Been Narrowed to Standardized Test Scores

Cara Quinn, the state’s 2015 Teacher of the Year and a sixth grade teacher in East Hartford, has a lot to say about the problems with over testing. In a speech to her fellow teachers of the year Tuesday night at the Bushnell, she said, “It seems the very definition of good teaching has been redefined and our focus as educators has shifted from a child centered approach to an increased emphasis on data and numbers.”

Watch Quinn’s complete speech here or below. If you are short on time, her remarks about over testing start at 4 minutes 45 seconds.
